Robert Hahn
“Soup had to be on the menu every day.”
Serdica, Slovenia, 2025
In this interview for the Roma Soul Food project, Robert Hahn reflects on childhood memories of simple, homemade food, where soup was an everyday part of the menu and holiday meals were less about abundance than about being together as a family. He connects healthy food with homegrown produce, freshness and traditional preparation, recalling practices such as using honey for health and cooking with lard instead of oil. As an adult, he notes that food has changed in taste and quality, while some habits remain important to him, especially soup, dishes “eaten with a spoon,” and the idea of food as part of family enjoyment and shared heritage.
