The Digital Archive
Available online by the end of 2025
This summer has been a season of stories, voices, and memories for the Roma Soul Food project. Across Slovenia, Greece, and Serbia, our dedicated teams conducted in-depth oral history interviews, gathering around ten conversations in each country. These dialogues are much more than simple recollections — they form a living archive of Roma culinary traditions, cultural heritage, and everyday experiences.
In the last qurter of 2025, these collected stories will come together in the Roma Soul Food Digital Archive, an open online resource where visitors can explore recipes, memories, and traditions that reflect the depth and diversity of Roma culture.
At the heart of the archive is the belief that food is never just nourishment. It is memory, identity, and connection. Through recorded stories, we preserve recipes passed down through generations, childhood memories of shared meals, and the role of food in shaping family and community life. By presenting these accounts side by side, the archive opens space for intergenerational dialogue and cross-border exchange, while also showing the shared threads that unite Roma communities across Europe.
Beyond text and testimony, the archive offers a rich audio-visual experience. Collaborations with musicians, on-site recordings of recipes told in Romani and local languages, and video narratives bring heritage to life in innovative ways. This approach not only documents traditions but also strengthens cultural resilience, fosters social inclusion, and connects Roma expression with diverse audiences.
With the launch of the Roma Soul Food Digital Archive, we invite you to discover how food connects us across generations and borders — a journey through taste, memory, and heritage that belongs to all of us.
The Roma Soul Food project is co-funded by the European Union.
