Blaž Horvat

“With what they had at home, they prepared a feast.”

Vadarci, Slovenia, 2025

In this interview for the Roma Soul Food project, Blaž Horvat reflects on childhood food memories shaped by simple, filling dishes such as sour milk, žganiki, white coffee, nokelen and pradohumer, with meat playing a central role in family meals and celebrations. He recalls that food choices were often guided more by affordability than by health, while home remedies such as tea, honey and lemon remained common. Blaž also contrasts the seasonal and simpler food of the past with today’s greater availability and more abundant holiday tables. In his adult life, traditional Romani dishes such as pot-bread, nokelen and kokala remain part of family meals, while his experience with sport has made him more aware of the connection between food, health and caring for the body.
